android and openmoko

As a fan of open-source, I’m eagerly awaiting the first phone on Google’s Android Operating System. And of course, I’d love to play with an OpenMoko. But until either of those events occurs, I’m following several blogs about each. So expect to find many new items on open mobile devices to be shared in my “Shared Items.”

Oh and check these OpenMoko videos.

And this Wired piece on Android is a pretty good introduction to it.

I am so embarassed to have this

It’s official: I’m one of those weirdo hippie jerks who brings his own recycle-able bags to the store. I typically have no problem with this but today there was a really cute girl in line behind me as I tried to cram everything into one small “eco-friendly” bag.

I do have a great little bag that wraps up into itself making it simple to have with me all the time in case I make a grocery stop and don’t have my larger bags with me. The downside?

That horrible font.

NashvilleZine.org

More than just a simple revamp of NashvilleZine.com, NashvilleZine.org embodies a new approach to social media. The .com site that I shut down in 2006 was largely reactionary — a response to what I thought was lacking in local media at the time. Since then, I’ve become convinced that establishment media can’t become new web media. The new Zine is a positive assertion that a community can cover and report on itself better than a bureaucratized institution.

the most amazing website ever

Seriously. I don’t know when I was last entertained this much on the web.

Couple things:
I am shocked — shocked — this came out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. My guess was somewhere in the Soviet bloc.

Dude, it’s fucking re-scalable. Re-size your browser window and check it out.

what a douche

I hate the smarmy, jaded cynicism in this post about Google putting ads on their home page. I hate the all-knowing “it’s inevitable” tone. Come on, Google, don’t do it just to prove this guy wrong.

yet another reason to hate wysiwyg

I read blogs through Google Reader because I follow more than 200 blogs and I couldn’t do that without using some kind of aggregation tool. One of the great benefits of using Reader is that all the blogs I read are equalized in design — every one is displayed in Google’s default Reader style, not the individual blog’s design. This gives every blog a very plain text feel. (continue reading…)

iPhone jailbreak with Quickpwn doesn’t need iTunes based restore. Whatever that means.

android video

Supposedly, this is a video of Google’s Android operating system for mobile devices:

it’s a pretty crappy video but I’m just happy to see it working. Hopefully more info like this will sneak out in the next few months. Android is open source so I’d hope information about development on it becomes more open and available.

is google leaving billions on the table?

So asks CNET’s Dan Farber regarding Google CEO Eric Schmidt telling Jim Cramer that Google wouldn’t put ads on its homepage even though they could bring billions of dollars. I say, way to go Google. Here’s Schmidt’s genius statement to Cramer:

We prioritize the end user over the advertiser

Yes. It’s fantastic to see this sort of action from a major company. Too often the end user (or the customer) gets screwed by the company’s pursuit of every dollar imaginable. More businesses need to follow Google’s mission to “focus on the user and all else will follow.”
