Britney Spears, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative DVD
[Review for Popshot.]
Oh, you can turn your nose up if you want, but you can’t deny the power of Britney. This video collection is exactly what a whole lot of us have been anticipating for a long time.
Clearly, taking her cues from Madonna (and avoiding M’s embarassing missteps like “True Blue”), Britney has made each of her videos a unique cinematic experience. Not even her greatest rival, Christina Aguilera, can compete with Britney for consistent quality of video output.
This DVD collects every sweaty episode, even the curiosly abbreviated “Outrageous” (was it in production when she hurt her ankle or whatever?). And for the dedicated fan, there’s loads of extras — different edits, outtakes, angles, audio. “Toxic’s” bonus material is a karaoke version with Britney performing the entire song in the sparkly, see-through body suit that she wears all too briefly in the original video. (The lyrics cleverly cover her nipples.) Watching her dance around that bare is… does… what was I saying? I just glanced at the video and lost all train of thought. Anyway, I’ll register one totally nerdy complaint: this is a major release from the biggest pop star around; couldn’t they get anyone to proof read the lyrics that flash on the screen? In every chorus, it reads “your toxic” not “you’re toxic.”
Nonetheless, it’s nice to see a big release with so many extras. Even a casual fan could play around the DVD for a while. It’s certainly occupied enough of my time.
